Thanksgiving carols

I have always wondered why we have a few Halloween songs and there are a lot of songs for other holidays, but Thanksgiving only has lame songs about giving thanks. I want songs about turkeys, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all that other great stuff.

Yes, I know there are football songs. Do not get me started on football on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Maybe you just did. I might just do that. Write a column on the evils of Football on Holidays. I wonder if the government has commissioned a study on that, yet.

We can find everything on the internet, so I searched and found many options. The first was very interesting, “Gobble, Gobble” by Matthew West. He begins like I did wondering why there are no songs about Thanksgiving. Watch it and if you don’t like the adult version check out the kid’s version.

As I was searching, I found “Five Fat Turkeys” which I first head when my daughter came home from school singing it around this time of year when she was in elementary school. I have no idea how long it has existed. All three of these girls are in their forties.

Then there is “A Thanksgiving Prayer” by Johnny Cash which I first heard when he sang it to his wife, June Carter Cash, on “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman.” This one had slipped out of my mind as well.

Then there are some that I did not even think about considering for this holiday. “Mashed Potato” by Dee Dee Sharp was one I heard back in the 1960s. Is there one about cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, or stuffing? Yes, there are, but they are for kids, bad humor, or stuck in insignificant albums by people I’ve not heard of before.

Unless you consider Ray Charles and James Taylor’s “Sweet Potato Pie” from the “Genius Loves Company” album or “Country Bumpkin” by Cal Smith to be a Thanksgiving Song. There are many tunes like these that we could stretch our imagination to include them. “Autumn Leaves” by Nat King Cole and “Harvest Time” by Luke Bryan is two more that fit this category.

There is one more that I would like to mention before I encourage you to do your own research and discover that I was wrong. “Thanks Giver” by Crowder is absolutely a Thanksgiving season song. It is on their “Milk & Cookies” album which is a Christmas project.

Check all of these and others out and make your own playlist for your family feast. If you put the videos on a live stream on a TV and lose the football during dinner, maybe no one will notice while they are laughing. It could happen.

It’s the Holiday Season

Yes, it is. Which holiday is next? This American Holiday season includes three. We have many holidays each year. Check the internet and see what today is on the official calendar. Many things will appear for each individual day. As I am writing this column, I checked https://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/november/november-14 and found these facts. View it yourself for others.

Today is National Seatbelt Day and Family PJ Day as well as Robert Fulton’s birthday. Happy birthday to the developer of the first commercial steam ship. Sherwood Schwartz was also born on this day. He is the creator of “Gilligan’s Island” and “The Brady Bunch.” Let’s not forget Henry Blake, the original commander of MASH 477 played by Mclean Stevenson.

This site is full of trivia about any day of the year. Put your birthday in and see which other important people besides yourself were born that day and what Congress is honoring on your day. As you scroll down you will see what events your day is famous for. Maybe your birthday will appear here in the future.

Scrolling back up, let’s look at the three holidays that make up this season. The first was All Hallows Eve that we call Halloween. It and the third day, Christmas, were part of the Christianization of Roman holidays after Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official Roman religion. The second of these days is the all-American Thanksgiving. This is the next on our calendar.

Marketers here want you to start shopping for these three days and refer to the “Holiday Season” to mostly impact your wallet. This is capitalism at its finest. Our economy is based on this concept. Sell your products and services however you can. If a particular day on the calendar can be used, so be it.

I will be talking more about Christmas and have expounded on Halloween before. I want to take an in-depth look at why we Americans should be thankful. For one thing, the election is over. This happens every two years in November and this year is no different from others. We can put politics out of our minds. If the media can be shut out.

What else are you thankful for this year? Health, happiness, family, and friends are things that come to my mind. I’ve celebrated forty-eight years of marriage with one woman. If you can’t say this, think of something that is important to you.

We have three daughters and twelve grandchildren. That will make for a noisy and happy Thanksgiving celebration. Our feelings of contentment don’t revolve around this group. We have an extended family, a host of friends, a nice home, a dog, and many conveniences of our modern lifestyle. Least of all is the computer and internet that bring my words to you.

Unlike us, many of you may not count health high on your list. I put it in the lead not because ours is perfect. It is manageable, most days. I rank it high because of how much worse it could be. We could have cancer, again. We could be dealing with heart issues, again. We have our problems that the medical community seems to be unable to diagnose. That may be your problem this season.

I want to stop worrying about my difficulties and be thankful for what I do have. I have a lot. I am reminded of that at this time of year as we prepare for the family to return home and must put as much as possible away before they arrive. Don’t open the closet Fibber McGee.

Also, do not forget to be thankful for our savior. If you are not a believer in Him, investigate my archives and stay tuned. We will have more before the next big holiday.

Life can be a constant bother or joy. It is all in the way you perceive it. Approach these holidays with an attitude of gratitude not of dread. Depression can get us at any time. Watch for it raising its ugly head and kick it in the teeth with a song of Thanksgiving and joy. I’m saving Christmas music until December.

That is what I am thankful for

I just viewed the movie “Up in the air” with George Clooney. If you have never seen this film, I will try to tell you about it without spoiling the ending. The Clooney character works for a company that specializes in helping others downsize their staff.

He travels a great deal and is asked what his goal in life is. His answer is to reach one million miles on his frequent flyer miles. This would make him the seventh to reach that milestone.

I used to travel for my job. For three years I would visit customers every day of the week through southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas. I spent two nights away from home to cover part of my territory once a month. I do not know what it would be like to travel all over the country constantly.

My family grew up knowing that I would be home almost every night. My children have not been traumatized by not having their father involved. This is the first thing I am thankful for this year.

The second is that my wife and I were married before I had to move away after graduating from college. Our relationship survived a ten-week separation shortly after we were engaged. I am thankful that we have been married for forty-six years.

I am grateful that Jesus saved me and called me to be a minister of His gospel. That has included over forty years of serving at Hamlin Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri. My ministry has been leading Bible studies for youth and adults. I am also a member of their Deacon body. My work has also enabled me to be a workplace servant.

Our daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren have also been tremendous blessings. As I watch them grow and mature into decent human beings, I am proud of who they are becoming and have become.

Another thing I want to share is that I am proud to be an American and thankful for those who protect us daily in the armed forces and as first responders. I do not want to become one who says that our country needs to become great again. I also am glad that our laws are such that many of us vote for those that we wish to lead our constitutional government.

Our country may not be perfect. Our lives are not always what we want them to be, but we can make changes and choices. Life can be much worse as we are constantly reminded when we watch the news. Remember, life is as good as you make it and part of that is based on your attitude. Happy Thanksgiving.
